South Coast in Winter
7 days, 6 nights: October through March
On this journey you will witness the spectacular Jokulsarlon glacier lake where icy blue icebergs calve into a lagoon and float out to sea. The south coast offers some of Iceland´s most dramatic and varied scenery with glaciers, volcanoes and cascading waterfalls on one side and black-sand beaches on the other.
Day 1, Welcome to Iceland!
Our car service will pick you up at the airport and drive you to Reykjavik, where you check into your downtown hotel. Spend the day at leisure with recommendations from us.
Day 2, Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss:
Today, your private guide and vehicle will pick you up in the morning. We start the day with an early morning pick-up from your hotel and a drive to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of Iceland's Parliament between the years 930 and 1798. Thingvellir is also one of the few places in the world where you can clearly see the effects of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pulling apart. After lunch, we explore the Geysir hot spring area and Gullfoss waterfalls. We overnight in the countryside, where conditions for viewing the Northern Lights are optimal. Optional activities today include a visit to a horse ranch and one hour riding tour or a snowmobile ride on Langjökull glacier.
Day 3, South Coast to Kirkjubaejarklaustur:
After breakfast, we start our adventure along the south coast of Iceland. First we stop at beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the waterfall. Then we drive to Solheimajokull glacier where we don crampons and other glacier gear and go on a glacier hike with a professional glacier guide. We’ll visit the small village of Vik and explore the black-sanded beaches. In the afternoon we continue across one the largest lavafields in the world and end the day in the small town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur where you will stay for two nights. In the evening, if conditions are favorable, you will have an opportunity to hunt for the Northern Lights.
Day 4, Skaftafell National Park, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon:
Today we´ll explore the area beneath Vatnajökull glacier, Europe´s largest ice-cap. We´ll begin by heading to Skaftafell National Park and enjoy the amazing alpine surroundings of glacier tongues, mountain peaks and the black desert sands stretching out to sea. After one or two other stops, we´ll head to the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift out to sea. Two James Bond movies were filmed in this fantastic location and floating among the ice you may spot seals, eider ducks, and, even witness the glacier calving into the crystal turquoise waters. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
Day 5, Myrdalsjokull Glacier and Return to Reykjavik:
Today, we return to Reykjavik with many interesting stops along the way including the beautiful Skogafoss waterfall. We will also visit Dyrholaey headland for dramatic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. Check into your downtown hotel in Reykjavik. Optional activity today: Snowmobile tour on Myrdalsjokull glacier.
Day 6, Free Day in Reykjavik:
Day 7, Blue Lagoon and Departure:
We'll provide private airport transfers 3-hours before your scheduled departure time. Guests leaving in the afternoon may want to consider a day at the Blue Lagoon spa, in which case we'll pick you up at your hotel at 11 AM. After spending up to 90 minutes in the Lagoon's warm aqua-blue waters--renowned for their healing powers--we'll drive you to the airport in time for your afternoon flight.
